MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Geraldine Public Library is to provide quality recreational and informational services to the Geraldine and surrounding communities of Alabama and lower DeKalb County.
Geraldine Public Library serves 900 local residents. The library also serves surrounding communities of Dawson, Crossville, Fyffe, Grove Oak, Skirum, and Oak Hill. Library services include, but are not limited to, providing a current diverse library collection that includes fiction and non-fiction books, children, juvenile, and youth books. The library also has videos, DVD's, and CD's. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public, as well as a fax machine and copier. Specialty areas include large print and audio books. The library sponsors a monthly vision support meeting, as well as a summer reading program for K-6th grade.
HISTORY
The library was founded in 1987 with the support of the Geraldine Town Council. Appointed board members were Coolidge Isbell, Evelyn Wester, Willodean Mauldin, Billie Crumly, and Rhonyn Norris. The first librarian appointed was Pat Hatley, along with many volunteers.
Geraldine Public Library moved in 1993 to its present location. The building was built from donations by two citizens of the community, Mary Martin and Nell and Coolidge Isbell. Today, the library is supported financially by the Town of Geraldine, DeKalb County Commission, Mr. Coolidge Isbell, and the State of Alabama through the Alabama Public Library System.
With the help of Diane Maddox, our current Director, and assistants Ruby McGee and Linda Collins, the library is open approximately 37 hours per week. The library board is responsible for overseeing the functions of the library. The library board meets every 3 months.
Circulation was automated in 2007. The library is fully automated with the DeKalb County Public Library and other libraries in the county also share online circulation.
